Fabric labels are the most useful thing in fashion that nobody reads. In a climate like Singapore's, the fibre on that little tag decides whether you'll feel fresh at 6pm or desperate for a shower by lunch. Here's the honest comparison.
Polyester & blends: cheap, but you pay in comfort
Polyester dominates fast fashion because it's inexpensive and holds print well. But it's essentially plastic: it doesn't absorb moisture, so sweat sits between skin and fabric. It also holds onto odour — that's why synthetic tops need washing after every single wear. Fine in air-con, rough at a hawker centre.
Cotton: good — if it's the right cotton
Cotton breathes well and feels soft, which is why it's the default “natural” choice. Its weakness in humidity is drying time: once cotton is saturated, it stays damp. Lightweight, loosely woven cotton works well here; heavy jersey doesn't. We use organic cotton for softness where it makes sense — usually blended into pieces that touch the skin.
Linen: built for exactly this weather
Linen absorbs up to 20% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, dries faster than cotton, and its slightly stiff weave holds the fabric away from your skin so air keeps moving. It resists odour naturally, gets softer with every wash, and lasts years. The trade-off — those natural creases — is really a style choice: pressed linen looks formal, lived-in linen looks relaxed. There's a reason every hot-climate culture from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia dressed in flax and hemp long before air-conditioning.

Before buying anything to wear in Singapore, check: is it 100% natural fibre (linen, cotton, hemp), or a blend hiding 40% polyester? Is the weave open enough to see light through when held up? Does the cut allow air to move, or is it fitted with elastane? Three questions, and you'll never buy a sticky dress again.
